Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has officially announced that he will not run for president in Uganda’s 2026 elections. Instead, he has pledged his full support to his father, President Yoweri Museveni, who is expected to seek re-election.
In a similar vein, I would like to announce that I will not be on the ballot paper in 2026 either. Almighty God has called me to focus on His Army first. Therefore, I fully endorse President Yoweri Museveni in the upcoming elections.
While the news of Gen Muhoozi’s withdrawal has surprised many, including his supporters who had started mobilizing for his candidacy, his decision reflects a broader dynamic of leadership continuity within Uganda. Muhoozi’s endorsement of his father, now 80, has also raised important questions about Uganda’s political future, the military’s role in governance, and the potential for leadership transition.
Though Muhoozi had once declared his intention to stand for the presidency in 2026, he has since clarified his stance, endorsing President Museveni instead, a move which may signal a strategic political alignment within the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
To all PLU (Patriotic Leadership Uganda) members who wish to contest for parliament, you are free to do so. PLU is a civic organization, not a political party, and I encourage those interested to align with NRM, as it remains most closely aligned with our values.
