The Practice of Investors Building in Wetlands Has Significantly Harmed the Environment – Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga

The Kingdom of Buganda celebrated its Bulungibwansi Day on October 8th, a day set aside to commemorate Buganda’s independence. The main event was held in Kyaggwe at the grounds of the Mutuba V Nyenga Sub-County under the theme, “Bulungibwansi in the Youth as the Strength of Buganda.”

The event featured the commissioning of a road project that His Royal Highness the Kabaka of Buganda inaugurated in 2018 in Mutuba V Wakisi, also in Kyaggwe. The main guest was the Katikkiro (Prime Minister) Charles Peter Mayiga, who, in his speech, criticized the government for the high cost of electricity, which could have helped people in cooking and running income-generating activities. Due to the unaffordability of electricity, people are forced to cut down trees to use firewood for cooking at home.

The practice of investors building in wetlands, according to Kamalabyonna, has also significantly harmed the environment.

Since Buganda has a share in Uganda’s development and was instrumental in the country’s independence in 1962 through the late King Muteesa, it is important to commemorate Buganda’s independence by engaging in community service (Bulungibwansi) while remembering the responsibility that the late King Ttembo instilled in his people when he established his reign with the motto, “I do not want to reign in laziness” – Katikkiro Mayiga.

He thanked the Kabaka’s chiefs for their selfless service to the Kingdom by following in the footsteps of their ancestors and urged them to be innovative, determined, and transparent in their work while having a far-sighted vision.

He also advised the chiefs to unite the Kabaka’s subjects across all sectors without discrimination because, as long as someone recognizes that the Kabaka is their father, they are all the Kabaka’s children. He urged them to strengthen the five main principles of the Kingdom, as these will unite the people and make it harder for Buganda’s enemies to succeed.

The Minister for Bulungibwansi, Environment, Water, and the Welfare of People, Owek. Hajjat Mariam Nkalubo Mayanja, encouraged people to adopt the practice of Bulungibwansi in their respective areas and maintain cleanliness.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Local Government, the Kabaka’s tours, and Buganda’s external affairs, Owek. Joseph Kawuki, informed the Katikkiro that by this day, all the chiefs had been trained in leadership matters, and many had been officially installed. He therefore urged the chiefs to perform their duties with the integrity the Kabaka has entrusted in them and to strengthen the foundations of leadership at all levels of the Kingdom.
