The NRM National Treasurer, Ambassador Barbara Nekesa, has urged religious leaders to integrate the gospel of wealth creation into their sermons as a vital tool in the fight against poverty. Hosting a delegation of religious leaders from Busia district at the NRM secretariat, Amb. Nekesa emphasized the key role religious leaders’ play in shaping community development.
“The fight against poverty cannot be won without you, the religious leaders. So as you preach the sermons about God, please also tell our people to engage in production for both food and money to live happily. Because our people trust you so much,” Nekesa said.
She encouraged church leaders to advise their congregations to embrace government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and skilling hubs, which aim to empower communities and improve livelihoods. Nekesa stressed that a wealthier population contributes significantly to national development through tax payments, which in turn fund infrastructure projects like roads, schools, and hospitals.
“The mindset of working for the stomach alone should quickly change to focus on both food and money,” she reiterated.

Nekesa also discouraged the practice of providing handouts to the population, emphasizing that sustainable wealth creation requires collective effort. “With government support, our people should work together through SACCOs and Associations for the common good of themselves,” she added.
Ms. Doreen Nafuna, the Assistant RDC of Busia district who led the delegation, praised Amb. Nekesa for her guidance and underscored the importance of cooperation between religious organizations and the government to uplift communities. “When religious leaders speak, our people keenly listen. They are key actors of mindset change, which is crucial in the fight against poverty,” Nafuna noted.
Bishop Lawrence Lumu, one of the visiting leaders, commended the NRM government for ensuring freedom of worship and maintaining peace and stability in the country. He also shared how the church had initiated agricultural projects on its land and expressed hope that with further support, these initiatives would significantly contribute to the community’s development.
