During a Thanksgiving and Dedication service for 31 P7 candidates at Joy and Jolly Nursery and Primary School in Kitega-St Dunstan Parish, Nasuuti Archdeaconry, Venerable Kenneth Rottan Lukwago Kampi delivered a thought-provoking message, addressing Uganda’s evolving social dynamics. He voiced concerns over the intense focus on empowering the girl child, which, he argued, has left the boy child without adequate guidance and support, resulting in a societal imbalance.
Citing findings from the “State of Uganda’s Fathers 2021” report by Makerere University in collaboration with the AfriChild NGO, Kampi highlighted statistics underscoring a crisis in fatherhood: 10% of Ugandan fathers are unaware of their children, 40% have abandoned them, 45% provide but lack emotional engagement, and only a small 5% genuinely connect with their children. According to Kampi, this troubling disconnect is exacerbated by the one-sided emphasis on uplifting girls, leaving many boys without strong role models or proper moral direction.
He likened this neglect to “washing clothes and drying them in the mud,” suggesting that the campaign has created a gap, where girls grow up responsible, only to encounter men who lack the family-oriented values and readiness for long-term relationships. Kampi cautioned that this discrepancy could lead to higher divorce and separation rates, noting that Uganda witnesses around 370,000 separations each year.
Only ten fathers attended the service out of over 100 parents present. Joined by Rev. Can Geoffrey Kagoye, Vicar Asaf Mabirizi, and Chaplain Gideon Ssegawa, Kampi prayed for the P7 candidates, encouraging them to approach their exams with faith and confidence.
Headteacher Emmanuel Omeja praised last year’s performance, where the majority of students scored in the first grade, and expressed optimism for another successful year. Ms. Kakayi Rachel, the school’s directress, acknowledged the dedication of parents, affirming the school’s commitment to raising morally upright, academically excellent, and spiritually grounded children. Established in 2009 with only four students, Joy and Jolly Kitega now serves over 500 pupils, standing as a beacon of holistic education in the community.
