The Church of Uganda and Namirembe Diocese mournes the loss of Bishop Emeritus Samuel Balagadde Ssekadde, who passed away this evening at the age of 80. Bishop Ssekadde, the 5th Bishop of Namirembe Diocese, served with dedication and deep spiritual commitment, leaving a lasting impact on the church and the community he faithfully led.
Born on January 31, 1944, Bishop Ssekadde grew up in the Buganda region, where he was raised in a devout Christian family. He attended Mengo Primary School and Kings College Budo before pursuing theological studies at Bishop Tucker Theological College in Mukono, now known as Uganda Christian University (UCU) He was ordained as a priest in 1967, beginning a journey of ministry marked by humility and dedication to serving God and the people of Uganda.
Throughout his early ministry, Bishop Ssekadde served in various parishes across the Namirembe Diocese, demonstrating a passion for community outreach and spiritual growth. His leadership qualities led to his appointment as the Vicar of St. Luke’s Church, Kibuye, where he was known for strengthening the church’s programs and fostering community development.
In 1994, Ssekadde was consecrated as the Bishop of Namirembe Diocese, succeeding Bishop Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo, who had become the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda. For a decade, he led the diocese with a focus on education, health, and community empowerment. Under his leadership, Namirembe Diocese saw the strengthening of schools, the expansion of Namirembe Hospital, and significant support for Uganda Christian University. His vision was to build a church that addressed both spiritual and social needs.
Bishop Ssekadde retired in 2009, passing on leadership to Bishop Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira. Even after retirement, he continued to mentor younger clergy, offering wisdom and guidance to the Church of Uganda. Known for his humility, Ssekadde remained a sought-after speaker, always urging unity, peace, and faithfulness to God’s calling.
His legacy is one of a servant-leader who believed deeply in the transformative power of faith and community. He is remembered for his emphasis on prayer, education, and holistic development, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to shape the diocese and the Church of Uganda for years to come.
