Mukono High School Bids Farewell to HM Kawumi Mbaziira as Bishop Kagodo Urges Government to Reconsider URA Taxation on Religious-Based Schools.

The government has been urged not too hastily impose taxes on schools founded by the Church, even if some receive financial support from the state. Bishop Enos Kitto Kagodo of Mukono Diocese described such a move as unfair and emphasized the importance of supporting these institutions so they can continue fulfilling the Church’s mission in education.

At Dekamos Media Services, we are here to remind you that capturing your great moments is our passion.

Bishop Kagodo made these remarks at Mukono High School, situated in Mukono Municipality, during a thanksgiving ceremony organized to officially bid farewell to the outgoing headteacher, Fredrick Kawumi Mbaziira, who served in that capacity for five years. The event also celebrated the school’s commendable performance in the 2024 Uganda Certificate of Education (S.4) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (S.6) national examinations.

Dr. Livingston Ssewanyana, Deputy Chancellor of the Diocese of Mukono, former chairperson of the school’s Board of Governors, and former head of Human Rights Initiatives in Uganda, commended Mbaziira for his commitment and service. He noted that the headteacher’s leadership significantly transformed the school’s image through improvements in academics, infrastructure, sanitation, discipline, and other key areas—earning Mukono High School a place of pride within the Diocese.

In his sermon, Bishop Kagodo repeated his appeal to the government not to enforce taxation through the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on Church-established schools. He emphasized that, while some of these schools receive government support, taxing them would be unjust. Instead, he called for continued support to ensure these schools can effectively serve their spiritual and educational missions.

In his farewell speech, Mr. Fredrick Kawumi Mbaziira expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Church of Uganda for the trust placed in him. He shared that when then-Bishop James William Ssebaggala appointed him, he was tasked with improving discipline, academic excellence, and positioning Mukono High School at an internationally competitive standard. He thanked the Diocese and the entire school community for enabling him to achieve these goals and for granting him a peaceful exit.

Incoming Headteacher Hilda Nawanje Kasule also expressed her gratitude to Mr. Mbaziira for his significant contributions to the school. She pledged to continue building on the strong foundation laid during his tenure and to push Mukono High School even further in terms of growth and excellence.

The colorful event was graced by a number of dignitaries, including retired Bishop of Mukono James William Ssebaggala, Mama Catherine Kitto, Diocesan Secretary Rev.
