Hon. Rev. Dr. Peter Bakaluba, the Chairperson of Mukono District Local Government, has raised concerns about the growing trend of school dropouts, particularly among boys in rural and lakeside communities. He emphasized the urgency for leaders to work together to address this pressing issue.
Dr. Bakaluba made these remarks during the District State of Address, held at the Mukono District Council meeting for the year 2024. The session was chaired by Hon. Nakasi Hope Betty, the Speaker, and attended by district councilors from various sub-counties, departmental heads, committee leaders, and other stakeholders.
In her opening remarks, Hon. Nakasi Hope Betty welcomed all participants and thanked God for enabling the district’s achievements while expressing condolences to those who had lost loved ones.
During his address, Dr. Bakaluba highlighted various milestones achieved by the district, including improvements in agricultural practices, healthcare services, education, and the efficient utilization of taxpayer funds. However, he underscored his concern about the increasing rate of school dropouts, particularly among boys, and called on leaders to take concerted action to resolve the issue.
He also urged the district leadership and community to rally support for the Kyaggwe football team, which has brought recognition to the district by emerging as runners-up in a recent tournament, losing narrowly to Buddu at Namboole Stadium.
Councilor Miiro Mpirito Rashid, representing Kasawo Sub-County and Chairperson of the Education and Health Committee, lauded the address, noting that it inspired further efforts in education, including the construction of infrastructure in areas like Koome to support students and improve access to clean water and roads.
Similarly, Councilor Martha Nassazi of Naggalama Nakifuma Town Council and Secretary for Health and Gender, expressed satisfaction with the Chairperson’s report, particularly its focus on addressing the community’s needs, such as borehole drilling and improving sanitation.
Dr. Stephen Mulindwa, Mukono District’s health officer, used the platform to warn against the spread of Monkeypox and urged vigilance in the use of shared items. He called on religious institutions to establish healthcare facilities in high-traffic areas to improve disease monitoring and response.
The district leaders reaffirmed their commitment to addressing challenges and working collectively for the betterment of Mukono’s communities.
