A wave of patriotism swept across Mubende District as over 2,101 young students from eight secondary schools were passed out at Kasenyi Playground. These students, drawn primarily from Senior 1 (S1) and Senior 5 (S5), participated in an intensive one-week training organized by the Office of the President under the Patriotism Secretariat.
The schools involved included Kasenyi SS, which contributed 663 students, St. Charles Lwanga SS with 114 participants, Universal College with 114, Mubende Parents SS with 338, Mubende Army SS with 366, Mubende Light SS with 280, Comprehensive High School with 72, and Butoloogo Seed SS with 96. Notably, the girls outnumbered the boys, with 1,096 young women participating compared to 1,005 boys, demonstrating significant engagement from both genders in building the nation’s patriotic spirit.

During the six days of training, the students were immersed in teachings focused on instilling core values of patriotism, under the leadership of Ngirabakunzi John, the regional coordinator of the Patriotism Corps, and headteacher of Kasenyi Secondary School. The students engaged in a wide range of topics that are critical for their development, including career guidance, financial literacy, gender-based violence, crime prevention, peacebuilding, climate change, HIV/AIDS education, and personal development. These topics were selected to equip the students with practical knowledge and the mindset needed to contribute positively to their communities and nation.
Hon. Hope Grania Nakazibwe, the district woman representative in Parliament, expressed her gratitude to the trainers and participants, emphasizing the significance of promoting national values. “The ideology of the NRM government, centered on nationalism, Pan-Africanism, democracy, and socio-economic transformation, should serve as a guiding light for the youth of this nation,” she said. Nakazibwe encouraged the young patriots to stay disciplined, hardworking, and committed to making positive changes in their lives and their communities.
Hon. Hellen Seku, the Commissioner from the Office of the President under the Patriotism Secretariat, officiated the passing out ceremony. She reminded the young patriots of their responsibility to the nation, stating that patriotism is enshrined in the 1995 Constitution and deeply rooted in Uganda’s political history—from pre-colonial times through to post-colonial independence. “Patriotism,” she remarked, “is a must for every Ugandan.”
The patriotism programme, which was launched by President Yoweri Museveni in 2009, aims to foster national consciousness among Ugandans, particularly the youth who form the majority of the country’s population. Through this initiative, schools have become hubs for nurturing patriotism, encouraging young people to develop a sense of duty and pride in their nation.
As Uganda continues to build a brighter future, the Mubende patriotism training stands out as a testament to the power of education and leadership in shaping the minds of tomorrow’s citizens. With the values of nationalism, democracy, and socio-economic transformation at the forefront, these young patriots are poised to contribute to a more united, peaceful, and prosperous Uganda.
