In a surprising development in the political landscape of Greater Mukono, National Unity Platform (NUP) Member of Parliament Jimmy Lwanga representing Njeru Municipality in Buikwe District known as “Embwa ya Kyalo” has been appointed by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba to coordinate activities for the Pressure Group PLU in the region. The appointment marks a significant moment as it crosses traditional political divides, with a member of the opposition now taking up a role within a group associated with President Museveni’s government.
Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba who is the Chief of Defence Command of UPDF, a highly influential figure in Ugandan politics, particularly through his Muhoozi Army movement, has continually sought to expand his base of support across the country. The appointment of MP Lwanga, who has long been known for his affiliation with the opposition, signals a new approach—one that emphasizes collaboration across political lines for national progress.
Through the Secretary General and who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Kasambya County, Hon Daudi Kabanda said I am pleased to inform you that the Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has appointed the following individuals to serve in different Capacities in GREATER MUKONO.
- Jimmy Lwanga-Coordinator
- Mr Waswa Adrian Ddungu-Assistant Coordinator.
- Bankunda Augustine-Publicity Secretary.
- Mr Kasozi Abduhalla-Committee secretary.
- Mrs Daisy Sarah Ssonko Nabatanzi-Women Council Representative.
- Mr Kiberu Malik Kiberu-Youth council Representative.
- Mr Kintu Tadeo-PWDs Council Representative.
- Mr Mayanja David Tuserengete-Secretary Eldery Council.
Jimmy Lwanga, who represents Njeru Municipality under the NUP banner, has been an outspoken advocate for his constituents and has raised critical issues of governance and social welfare. His new role within the PLU could indicate a shift in his approach to Uganda’s political dynamics or an effort to bridge existing divides.
The move has sparked reactions from both the NUP camp and government supporters. Some NUP members have expressed concern, seeing it as a defection of one of their key members, while others are cautiously optimistic, viewing it as an opportunity for greater inclusivity and dialogue between Uganda’s diverse political actors. Government supporters, on the other hand, have hailed the appointment as a step toward national unity and progress, praising Gen. Muhoozi for his ability to unite leaders from different political backgrounds.
Political analysts suggest that this appointment could strengthen PLU’s influence in Greater Mukono, as MP Lwanga’s local popularity and grassroots networks will likely enhance the group’s organizational capacity. Furthermore, the coordination of PLU activities in the region under Lwanga may signal the broader strategy of Gen. Muhoozi to increase his appeal among young voters and opposition strongholds as the 2026 general elections approach.
This development comes amidst Uganda’s evolving political climate, with alliances being formed and reshaped as leaders position themselves for the future. Whether this new collaboration will last or bring about significant political shifts remains to be seen, but it is clear that Gen. Muhoozi’s PLU is making waves in regions previously dominated by opposition politics.
