The presiding magistrate at Mukono Chief Magistrate’s Court, Roselyn Nsenge, remanded the four Chinese nationals, who are the owners of the Tian Tang Group, to Kauga Prison until September 30th (next Monday) on five charges, including attempted murder, although they have denied the charges.
The court session was tense, with the presence of other Chinese nationals, Members of Parliament, human rights organizations, and people in civilian clothes flocking the courtroom. No journalists or individuals were allowed to take photographs, and efforts were made to prevent their transfer to prison, which delayed their departure until a van was brought for them.
The accused include Liang Kai, who faces two charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit a felony, Bin Ding, who is charged with attempted murder, Chen Cheng, who faces two charges of attempted murder, and Ai Wu Zheng, also known as Martin, who also faces two charges, including attempted murder and destruction of property.
It is alleged that the group attacked other Chinese nationals at the Namanve Industrial Park on the morning of the 18th of this month in a dispute stemming from work-related issues. The victims, Liu Qingshan (63) and Lu Hanbin (32), are the owners of Uganda NEC-WATU Automobile Group.
The attack was reportedly carried out by seven Chinese nationals, allegedly accompanied by armed personnel from the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF). The incident occurred at around 5 AM, when the group forcefully entered the victims’ residence, breaking doors and windows before brutally beating them and stealing some items, including phones, a desktop computer, and a laptop. The police arrived at the scene, but the attackers had already fled. The case was reported to Namanve Industrial Park Police Station, and the victims were rushed to Nakasero Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment for severe head and leg injuries.
Through their lawyers from Arcadia Advocates, the defendants have requested bail, but the chief government prosecutor, Emily Ninsima, opposed the request, asking the court to first assess the health conditions of the victims and the credentials of those offering sureties. The magistrate agreed to the request.
NEC-WATU Automobile Group, a joint venture with UPDF’s NEC (National Enterprise Corporation), primarily focuses on vehicle assembly and air-conditioning manufacturing. However, there has been ongoing tension with Tian Tang Group, which holds a 15% stake in NEC-WATU and reportedly controls the land on which the company operates.
Qingshan has accused Tian Tang Group of deliberately sabotaging their business by withholding important documents, such as land titles, and attempting to force them out of the company. He warned that if the harassment continues and the Ugandan government does not intervene, they may close their operations and relocate to neighboring Rwanda or Keny.
