The race for the Kisoro district woman Member of Parliament seat has officially begun, following the unfortunate passing of Hon. Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, who also served as the state minister for defense. As the NRM Electoral Commission kicks off the nomination process for the November by-election, attention is shifting to the future leadership of Kisoro.
At the heart of this pivotal moment is Dr. Tanga Odoi, the chairman of the NRM Electoral Commission, who presided over the nomination of five contestants vying for the party flag. The nominations took place at the electoral commission’s office on Kyadondo Road, Nakasero. The five aspirants, Akifeza Grace Ngabirano, Dushime Sylvia, Igiraneza Winfred Faith, Kabagenyi Rose, and Irankunda Jemimah, have thrown their hats into the ring to lead Kisoro forward.

Dr. Tanga Odoi sent a powerful message to the candidates: focus on the plans for the people, rather than dwelling on the past. He stressed the need for visionary leadership, as the people of Kisoro are looking for progress and development, not a continuation of old grievances. His statement sets a tone of hope, encouraging candidates to outline clear, actionable strategies for the region’s future.
With the NRM confident in maintaining its stronghold in Kisoro, Dr. Odoi remarked, “The NRM will defend the Kisoro seat because the people there are entirely yellow, and we don’t expect any serious competition once we front our flag bearer.”
Beyond just the party’s prospects, the chairman underscored the importance of integrity in the election process. The NRM Electoral Commission vowed to uphold the principles of a free and fair election, warning that no one, not even the party chairman, would be allowed to influence the process unjustly. Dr. Odoi emphasized that any attempts to manipulate the results would be met with firm resistance, reinforcing the party’s commitment to democracy.
Contestants were also cautioned against engaging in divisive tactics or violence, as such actions could result in disqualification. As the mourning period for Hon. Nyirabashitsi comes to a close, the focus is on moving forward, with the by-election being a crucial step in ensuring Kisoro’s continued growth and stability.

As the NRM gears up to select its flag bearer, all eyes will be on the candidate who will rise to the challenge of leading Kisoro into a brighter future.
