Hon. Sarah Aguti Nyangkori, the Woman MP for Dokolo District, has urged the government to focus on creating equal opportunities for teachers in both government and private schools before enforcing the policy requiring teachers to have degree qualifications. She made the remarks while addressing guests at Martyrs Way Nursery and Primary School in Sonde Namugongo, Mukono Municipality, during a nursery section concert and a graduation ceremony for students transitioning to Primary One in the upcoming academic year.
As a member of Parliament’s Education Committee, Hon. Aguti emphasized that while raising teacher qualification standards is crucial, systemic changes must come first to ensure fairness and inclusivity. She highlighted key challenges, including low teacher salaries and the burden of self-funding further education. She called on the government to intervene with financial support and establish training institutions to make higher education for teachers accessible.
“It is crucial that we create training institutions where all teachers can gain degrees without discrimination, whether they are from government or private schools. Teachers should not bear the financial burden alone, especially when their salaries are inadequate,” Hon. Aguti stated.
She also stressed that properly compensating and empowering teachers is vital for improving Uganda’s education system.
Holistic Education and Talent Development Emphasized
The school’s headteacher, Gerald Owori, highlighted the institution’s commitment to ensuring academic excellence while nurturing students’ talents. He underscored the importance of a holistic education system that integrates co-curricular activities to identify and develop children’s unique abilities.
The school management committee chairperson, Turyahike Willy, praised the teachers for their dedication and hard work. He pointed out that, while the school operates under the Church of Uganda, it accommodates students from all faiths, creating an inclusive and welcoming learning environment.
Preserving Culture Through Education
Madina, the head of the nursery section, commended the students for their performances in dance, drama, and other cultural activities under the theme “Old is Gold.” She noted that the theme aimed to introduce children to traditional culture and history, fostering an appreciation of their heritage.
Nurturing Talents Beyond Academics
Allan Mujjuni, a popular musician and comedian known as Amooti Omubalanguzi, entertained parents and students during the event. He encouraged parents to support their children’s talents alongside academics, emphasizing that nurturing such abilities could open unexpected paths to success.
Parental Guidance and Values Highlighted
The Director of Martyrs Way Nursery and Primary School, Jackson Tumuhairwe urged parents to focus on instilling good values and cultural awareness in their children, cautioning against overreliance on foreign practices and technology. He emphasized the importance of raising responsible children rooted in their cultural heritage.
Call for Education Access in Rural Areas
Robert Mugabe, an aspirant for Mukono Municipality, appealed to parents to ensure that all children, especially in rural areas, attend school. He highlighted education as a fundamental right and encouraged parents to actively advocate for their children’s access to learning opportunities.
The event underscored the school’s dedication to combining academic excellence with cultural preservation and talent development, aligning with a broader call for better support for teachers and learners in Uganda.
