RDC Mukono Urges Ugandans to Embrace Government Projects as New Water System Transforms Communities

In the heart of Mukono North, a long-standing struggle for clean water has finally come to an end. Residents of Waluga, Katogo, and Buyuki villages in Nama Sub County can now access safe water, thanks to a newly commissioned tap water project by the Ministry of Water and Environment.

At Dekamos Media Services, we are here to remind you that capturing your great moments is our passion.

The project, which utilizes solar power, is part of the government’s broader initiative to expand water coverage across Uganda. With over UGX 500 million allocated for similar projects in each constituency, officials hope to improve sanitation, reduce waterborne diseases, and ease the burden of fetching water over long distances.

Presiding over the commissioning ceremony, Mukono Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Hajjati Ndisaba Fatuma Nabitaka—represented by her Assistant RDC, Godfrey Kizza—called upon Ugandans to take full advantage of government initiatives. She urged them to use these projects not only to improve their livelihoods but also to foster self-sustainability and support their children’s education.

Eng.Petwa Mary Butemwa, the lead implementer from Nexus Green (UK) Limited explaining how the work moved.

“This government is working tirelessly to bring services closer to the people,” Kizza emphasized. “But for real transformation to happen, communities must own these projects, maintain them, and use them responsibly.”

Snr Eng. Umaru Ssekabembe from the Ministry of Water and Environment outlined the government’s national vision of ensuring clean water reaches even the most remote areas. He expressed optimism that, with ongoing funding, more villages will soon benefit from similar projects.

Eng.Petwa Mary Butemwa, the lead implementer from Nexus Green (UK) Limited, highlighted the hard work put into the project since 2024. “It’s a privilege to be part of a solution that impacts lives directly,” she said.

Meanwhile, Kizito Francis Walubi, representing Mukono Chief Administrative Officer Ms. Elizabeth Namanda, praised the government’s efforts and reminded residents that sustainability depends on their collective responsibility. “This is your water. Take care of it,” he urged.

Mukono District Secretary for Works, Water, and Natural Resources, Robert Mwesigwa Ssentongo, echoed the importance of community participation and thanked landowners who offered space for the water system without compensation and called on security agencies to safeguard the project against vandalism.

Hon. Jorem Kabali Kimera, Acting Vice Chairperson of Mukono District, who represented LCV Chairperson Hon. Rev. Dr. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa, commended the Ministry of Water for funding the project. He also took a moment to remind residents that development should unite people, not divide them.

Let’s appreciate what has been done and work together to protect these projects instead of politicizing them,” Kimera stated firmly.

For Waluga Village Chairperson, Sulaiman Katamba, the commissioning of the project marked the end of years of suffering.

“We have struggled with water shortages for so long. Our people, especially students, had to walk long distances to fetch water.

Today, that struggle ends,” he said, expressing gratitude to the government and local leaders.

His sentiments were echoed by excited residents who praised the Mukono District leadership, particularly Hon. Rev. Dr. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa, for championing their cause.

As the sun set over Nama Sub County, the sight of clean water flowing from the new taps symbolized a fresh start for the communities. It was a reminder that government projects, when embraced and well-managed, have the power to transform lives.

With local leaders urging residents to take ownership of the initiative, the success of this project could set the stage for even greater development in Mukono and beyond.
